Smoothies are my go-to drink for a healthy, energetic breakfast or when I need a boost after a workout session. I’ve been obsessed with the peanut butter banana smoothie for years and I’m always searching for new ideas using nut butter. Smoothies are super quick and easy to make, and you can be super creative around the recipes, using basically any fruit you like. Depending on the ingredients in season or simply your mood of the day, you are sure to find something right for you.
Using fresh figs and almond butter, this smoothie is just perfect when these precious fruits are in season, usually in the late summer days and in fall. Figs make your smoothie fiber-rich and bring a subtle flavor that is simply irresistible. I tried it once, tried it again, and again, and it’s now become a new favorite smoothie. Try it too and let me know how you like it!
Why you’ll love this smoothie
- A quick healthy drink with fresh figs ✔
- Using natural ingredients only (no protein powder needed) ✔
- Loaded with fiber and plant-based protein ✔
- Vegan and gluten-free ✔
- Boost your mood and energy ✔
The ingredients you need:
- Figs. I use fresh figs most of the time, but occasionally you can go for frozen figs (see below).
- Almond butter. Use it unsweetened, or replace with cashew butter if you wish (do not use peanut butter as its flavors will be too strong for the figs).
- Almond milk. I used unsweetened almond milk, but cashew milk, oat milk or any other vegetable milk would do too.
- Natural sweetener. You can go for either agave syrup or for maple syrup. The last one will add stronger notes to the smoothie while agave usually is neutral in taste.
Fresh figs versus frozen figs
It is not very common to find frozen figs in the store, but I happened to find some occasionally. When it’s the case, I purchase a bag of frozen figs and use them in my fig and almond smoothie. The texture is just right, but the flavor is usually less pronounced and fruity than it is with fresh figs. So my humble recommendation is to use fresh figs when available (and not too pricey) and go for frozen figs when you just want a boost of fiber.
Is this fig and almond smoothie healthy?
This fig and almond smoothie is prepared with natural ingredients, which makes it naturally healthy in this regard. It’s also very lightly sweetened with agave syrup or maple syrup, and you can adjust the quantity of this natural sweetener or skip it altogether if you prefer it not too sweet. And while the fat content of almond butter is high, it is mainly healthy fat, responsible for the “good cholesterol”. Almond butter and almond milk are also a great source of calcium, magnesium and vitamin B.
Possible recipe variations
You can make this smoothie following the recipe instructions, or add a few twists here and there. For instance, you can add a banana to make it more energetic, adjusting the quantity of milk until you reach the desired texture. Another option consists in replacing the almond butter with cashew butter. The drink is equally delicious and super creamy.

Ingredients
- 3 large fresh figs, cut in half
- 1 Tablespoon almond butter, unsweetened*
- ½ Tablespoon agave syrup or maple syrup
- 1 cup (240 ml) almond milk, unsweetened**
Instructions
- Add figs, almond butter, syrup and almond milk to a high powered blender.
- Blend everything until smooth and creamy, adjusting the quantity of milk to make it thinner or the quantity of almond butter to make it creamier.***
Notes
* You can add one more Tablespoon almond butter to make the smoothie thicker and creamier.
** Ideally you want to use almond milk but any other non dairy milk would work too (and so would dairy milk for a non vegan option).
*** For a more energetic drink, you can add one banana to the smoothie.
Note: This smoothie is also a good source of vitamin A (78.8%), vitamin E (32.4%), calcium (28.9%) and vitamin D (12.5%).

Bonjour delphine,

Bonjour Corinne!

Bonne nouvelle 🙂
