I’ve long been obsessed with avocado toasts, and I bet may of you have too! Whether I make myself a plain avocado toast, or add some toppings such as crumbled cheese and/or a sunny side up egg, avocado toast is definitely part of my healthy routine. I make it sometimes for breakfast, sometimes for a quick lunch or a savory snack, always with a bright smile on my face!

With so much experience behind me, I’m confident I can share with you some useful tips to help you make the perfect avocado toast every single time. Without further ado, let me unveil my secrets: it’s all about the seasoning!

What do you need to make avocado toast?

Not much really, and this is why I recommend you choose high quality ingredients, organic when possible. Here’s what you need:

  • Avocado. Naturally! Choose them ripe but still firm to the touch. You don’t want the flesh to have some brown spots to unsure a nice green color for your avocado toast (note however that the brown color will not impact the flavor of your avocado, it’s just about aesthetics here).
  • Bread. Although any bread will do, I recommend a great sourdough bread or multiseed bread for your avocado toast. Another favorite: making no-knead bread yourself and you’ll have homemade avocado toast from scratch!
  • Olive oil + lemon juice. You could use one or the other, or both (I go for both). Try to use extra virgin olive oil and freshly squeezed lemon juice for more flavors.
  • Seasoning. It all comes down to the choice of salt, pepper, with a hint of spice (check below for more details).

Now you might wonder how all of this brought me to this avocado toast! Let me tell you straight away: it’s a matter of seasoning. To be honest with you, I think I never noticed the importance of choosing “high quality” when it came to salt and pepper before. To me, salt was salt, and pepper was pepper. That was it.

But when I discovered Peugeot products years ago, it introduced my palate to a whole new world of flavors. Pairing them with the right ingredients can elevate the most simple recipe to a five-star dish. The avocado toast is indeed the perfect example in this matter. Try to season it with regular salt and pepper, and it tastes bland. You need something special to spice it up a notch.

Use the following spices to master the avocado toast every single time :

  • Timut Wild Pepper from Nepal (I use this one)
  • Persian Blue Salt from Iran (I use this one)
  • Pili Pili from Malawi (I use this one)

Timut pepper’s zesty flavors combined with the intense saline flavor and strong profile of blue salt produce astonishing citrus notes in your avocado toast. Freshly ground pili pili will add an additional kick to your avocado toast. That’s pretty much it. Whether you serve it plain on a slice of bread or add a poached egg to it, make sure the seasoning is right.

Other toppings for your avocado toast:

  • Burrata cheese. Torn a bowl of burrata cheese over your avocado toast and it instantly becomes a beautiful dish, loaded with fresh flavors.
  • Add egg. You can top your avocado toast with a sunny side up egg or maybe a runny poached egg. It’s a great boost of protein and it’s delicious!
  • Add beets. For some sweet and savory flavors, as well as a boost of color, roasted beets will do amazing with avocado.
  • Garnish with greens, sprouts and seeds. Arugula salad and other sprouts always garnish a toast very well. I also love to add some pumpkin or sunflower seeds. Be creative!
  • Deluxe version. Use all the above toppings to create the most wonderful avocado toast. Amazing!

Ingredients

  • 1 slice of bread
  • ½ ripe but firm avocado, stoned and peeled*
  • Lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • Extra virgin olive oil (optional)
  • Persian blue salt, freshly ground
  • Timut wild pepper, freshly ground
  • Pili Pili, freshly ground

Instructions

  1. Mash the avocado with a fork. Add the lemon juice, olive oil, and all the seasonings. Taste and adjust seasoning to your own tastes. Mix well.
  2. Spread over the slice of bread (plain or toasted).
  3. Sprinkle with additional freshly ground salt, pepper, and pili pili to boost the flavors, and enjoy!

Notes

* The perfect avocado to make avocado must be ripe but still firm to the touch and green inside. You don’t want brown spots in the flesh, not because it will affect the flavor, but simply because it will make your toast have an unpleasant brownish color.
