I have been making this smoothie/smoothie bowl over and over again the last past years and I am totally crazy about it. It’s now time to make you discover my favorite feel-good smoothie with spirulina! This smoothie is so basic and simple that I long wondered if I really needed to share it with you. Another issue I had: this awesome drink tastes so good that it usually disappears even before I catch my camera (I often have time to take a quick iPhone pic for my IG story though). But each time I try it again, I love it so much that the question comes up: should I share the recipe with you? The answer is yes!
I recently started to workout more (yes, New Years resolutions!), as the last months were not exactly the most productive ones regarding this aspect. Somehow, it seems that each time I move to a new country, I need some time to adapt first, and then find a new healthy routine which brings me harmony in life. I then feel so much better in both my body and mind! Is it the same with you? And by the way, is working out a top 2017 resolution for you too?
To me, the immediate consequence of working out more is that my brain naturally asks for healthy and nourishing food. As I love working out right after jumping out of the bed (it has always been this way, I feel so energized in the morning after a good night of sleep), my first meal after training is breakfast. Good news, cause breakfast has always been my favorite meal of the day. I like to make it different everyday, depending on how much time I have ahead, and in fact in my breakfast section, you can find some great inspiration (mostly sweet though, a sweet breakfast is an habit I kept from France).
Among breakfast, smoothies and smoothie bowls are something that comes back regularly at home, and for many years David and I have been crazy about my simple creamy banana & peanut butter smoothie, that I happen to make quite often actually – have you tried it yet? Later on, I discovered spirulina, this blue-green microalgae that you usually find available in powder, making it a perfect health supplement in your smoothies.
So what is spirulina exactly, where can you find it, and does it taste good? As I said previously, Spirulina is a blue-green microalgae that is considered as one of the World’s first superfood, and one of the most nutrient-rich food on Earth. With between 55 and 70% protein and also great amounts of amino acids, iron, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin B12, Spirulina provides a wide range of health benefits almost immediately upon ingestion. It provides a near-instantaneous boost to one’s energy, while helping to improve endurance and reduce fatigue. Spirulina is also a natural detoxifier, oxygenating the blood, and helping cleanse the body of toxins and other impurities that may be causing illnesses or other health complications. You usually find it in the health section of your grocery store (in Whole Foods for instance) or in other healthy stores.
Ok, so spirulina has many health benefits, but does it taste good (I mean, it’s a microalgae after all!)? The magic about spirulina is that if it’s not something I would recommend to eat raw, but combined in a smoothie it develops a sweet flavor that totally masks the greens, unlike Chlorella (another microalgae that I really dislike because of its awful taste of greens, even in smoothies).
To me, the best way to make your spirulina taste sweet, it’s to combine it in this banana-nut butter. I sometimes use peanut butter, sometimes almond or cashew butter, and they are all equally good in this smoothie. My secret is to use vegetal milk, and in particular almond milk. I tried with both caw milk and almond milk (unsweetened), and I noticed that the last one gives a much better rich texture to the drink. Finally you can decide to sweeten your smoothie (with agave or maple syrup, or with fresh dates), or just enjoy it without adding any natural sweetener if you use very ripe bananas as they contain more sugar.
For the final touch, make it fancy: serve as a smoothie bowl, and top with some chia seeds, almonds, and a few raspberries on top. You’ve got the perfect delicious (yes, I really, really love it – do not mind the green color of spirulina, you’ll see!) and energizing breakfast to keep you healthy!

I dread taking spirulina daily, and was skeptical but interested in trying this recipe out. I’m very glad I did! Kudos to you for this recipe; I find it very difficult to make the blue-green algae taste tolerable in various mixtures but it hides well in this blend. Overall a very pleasant, healthy & energy-boosting experience.

I’m so happy to hearing that, Erin! I love this smoothie and I never get tired of it. Peanut butter does an amazing job in the recipe 🙂

I would happily eat a big bowl for breakfast! Would you believe I’ve never tried spirulina before? I have to try for next time!

Oh, then you need to give the spirulina a try. You will be amazed by the quite sweet taste that totally contrasts with the smell which is not very appealing at first. Combined in this smoothie with banana and nut butter make it just out of this world. So good!
