I’m a firm believer that a guacamole makes any party a little bit better. I’ve been making this guacamole recipe for over 10 years with always the same success, so I figured you should know about it too. If you’re looking for an authentic guacamole recipe, prepared with fresh ingredients, this is the one and only one recipe you need.
The recipe comes with some useful tips to help you master the art of guacamole (it’s EASY!), as well as a few variations for those who want to go the extra mile and be creative. Don’t forget to serve with tortilla chips, and some margaritas!
Why we love this guacamole recipe?
- An EASY guacamole recipe ✔
- Only 6 ingredients! ✔
- A perfect chunky texture ✔
- The right seasoning with a little kick to it ✔
- Healthy, vegan, and gluten-free! ✔
- A must have to any party!
Guacamole ingredients
- Avocadoes. Choose them ripe, but not too soft and mushy.
- Red onions. Dice them thinly for a sharp, savory flavor. Red onions also add some texture to the guacamole. If you do not like red onions, use garlic only.
- Garlic. It adds some sharp flavors to the guacamole. You could skip it and keep red onions only, but I personally like them both together.
- Jalapeño. You can use a green or red jalapeño, or use a serrano pepper instead.
- Limes. Use freshly squeezed lime juice. It brings a tangy flavor to the guac and also keep it green!
- Cilantro. It adds some very refreshing flavors. But if you happen to be one of those who can’t stand the taste of cilantro, just skip it. Your guacamole will taste just fine, I promise!
Don’t forget the seasoning: salt and freshly ground pepper are the key elements to bring out all the flavors in the guacamole. Taste and adjust the seasoning as you go!
How to make guacamole?
Everyone can master a homemade guacamole. With just a handful of basic ingredients and a few minutes ahead of you, you can whip up the best guacamole. Here’s how to:
- Start with mashing the avocadoes with a fork or a potato peeler, making sure you leave a few bites behind. This is what gives the chunky texture we all love in a guacamole.
- Then add all the other ingredients: finely diced red onions, minced jalapeño and garlic, chopped cilantro, and lime juice. Add salt, pepper, and stir to combine.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed, according to your own preferences. You can add more salt, pepper, or even lime juice for more refreshing flavors.
- Serve up, and enjoy with tortilla chips or raw vegetables!
Can I double the recipe?
Yes, you can always scale the recipe if you need a guacamole for a bigger party. Use more avocadoes, red onions, garlic, limes, and cilantro. When it comes to the jalapeños however, I recommend adding half a jalapeño if you double the recipe. If it’s not spicy enough, add more (always better to add more afterwards). The seasoning will also need some adjustment: always taste and adjust as you go, until you get the perfect balance of flavors.
Tips for the best guacamole
- Choose your avocadoes carefully. You want to use ripe avocadoes, but that are still firm to the touch. Ideally, the avocadoes should still have the stem attached. It usually means they shouldn’t have any brown spots inside.
- Make it at the last minute. For the brightest, green guacamole with fresh flavors, make your it just before serving. This is the best way to avoid any kind of oxidization, since avocadoes tend to turn brown very quickly. Be reassured though, this doesn’t change the taste of your guacamole, it just doesn’t make it very appealing to parties.
- Make it chunky! Do not try to make it extra smooth, the best guacamole has this slightly unperfect chunky texture. Mash it with a fork or a potato masher, but make sure to leave some extra bites of avocado.
- Taste and adjust the seasoning. Since we all have different personal preferences, it’s important to taste the guacamole and then adjust the seasoning as needed. You can use half of a jalapeño if you don’t like it too spicy, use less red onion, and even pass on the cilantro if you don’t like the taste.
Variations: add a few twists to the recipe
I love this guacamole recipe just as it is, but I also have a few secrets to make it extra special, depending on the occasion. Here are just a few ideas to consider:
- Add some lime zest for some additional refreshing flavors.
- Add a pinch of ground cumin (or ground coriander) to your guacamole for a little extra flavor.
- Make a chipotle version by adding some smoked paprika powder. Delicious!
- Some love to add a diced tomato to the guacamole, feel free to do it too.
- You can also add some sweet corn kernels or pineapple chunks to make your guacamole extra special!
How to store guacamole (and keep it green)
We all know that avocadoes tend to turn brown once into contact with oxygen in the air, and the same happens to guacamole. To prevent this from happening, I always recommend to prepare the guacamole at the last minute before serving. Using lime juice helps to slow this process, but the guacamole will eventually turn brown with time. Keep in mind that while it gives the guacamole an unpleasant color, it doesn’t impact its taste!
The best preservation hack to keep guacamole green consists in transferring the guacamole in an airtight container, and cover with plastic wrap directly in contact with the guacamole to prevent oxidation. Make sure you press the plastic wrap down with your fingers so that it is covering the entire surface area. You can then refrigerate up to 2 days. When ready to serve, remove the plastic wrap, give the guac a good stir, and enjoy!

Ingredients
- 3 large ripe avocados, peeled and pitted
- 1 small jalapeño, thinly diced
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped
- 1 small garlic clove, minced
- A pinch of ground cumin (optional)*
- 2 limes, juiced
- Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Mash the avocado with a fork and make it as chunky as you like, to give some texture.
- Add the remaining ingredients and stir together. Taste, and adjust seasoning as needed, using more salt or lime juice to boost flavors. Serve immediately with tortilla chips, and enjoy!
Notes
Tip: this guacamole is best just before serving, as it prevents the oxidation process (i.e. the avocadoes turning brown when exposed to the air for too long).
* I like to add a pinch of ground cumin, or instead of ground coriander to my guacamole. It gives it an extra touch that is super delicious! If you like the refreshing flavors from the lime, consider adding the zest of one lime too.

Miam !
