My food philosophy

I believe in simple healthy eating habits, such as cooking from scratch, using real ingredients only, and mostly plant-based. This approach does include indulging in a feel-good dessert once in a while. Life is all about balance!

Plant-based means incorporating more plant products and plant proteins into your daily diet without completely eliminating animal products. Basically, plant-based can mean upping your veggie intake and reducing your intake of animal products or removing certain types of animal products from your diet completely.

About Del

The origins

I come from a farming family and grew up on a farm in France, owned by my parents. Hence, I naturally grew up eating seasonal produce from the garden, helping to part the soil with my little hands to pick up new potatoes (I promise it’s fun!), celebrating the harvest season every year, or baking apple pies with my grandparents (who were also farmers, on both sides). Telling you that I have a slight idea about farming is an understatement (I can even drive a tractor – true story!), which always amuses my friends who see me otherwise as a mostly city dweller. Truth is, I’m both!

From Paris to Stockholm

I was not always into recipe creations. Back in 2010, freshly graduated from La Sorbonne in Paris, I packed 2 large suitcases and headed to Sweden where I had just found a job in the diplomatic world (yep, I once worked in an embassy!). This was way before the blog but it’s where everything started really: where I met my now husband David, learned Swedish, and eventually got into cooking for good.

The birth of Del’s Cooking Twist

I started Del’s Cooking Twist on a whim in 2013, taking advantage of David’s tech skills to help me build my site. I had always been into cooking and my life in Stockholm nourished me with even more ideas around food: from exploring the local culinary traditions (hello kanelbullar!) to discovering more around the plant-based diet, gluten-free recipes and overall a healthy balanced diet.

I took up the additional challenge of writing EVERY single recipe in English and in French, hence the site has been entirely bilingual since day 1 (a colossal amount of work!). What started as a simple hobby besides my regular 9 to 5 job quickly became more than that…

Moving to Chicago

2016 marks a big jump for Del’s Cooking Twist: I finally made the move to go full time! Moving to Chicago together with David really appeared as the perfect opportunity for me. I could take a break of a few months and give the site the opportunity to thrive. And thrive it did! But this didn’t happen overnight. It took countless hours, days, and often nights of recipe testing, photographing, filming, and additional work to try to understand all the nitty-gritty technical stuff behind the site.

Growing the team

Slowly but surely, the site grew to a different dimension, and I welcomed a new member to the team, Mounia, the project manager and SEO specialist of Del’s Cooking Twist. She in charge of all the busy work that happens behind the scenes, making sure that everything runs smoothly. She is based in California and I just couldn’t do it all without her!

Hello Vancouver!

We loved our life in Chicago, but in 2020, just before the pandemic, we added one more stop to our life abroad and moved to Vancouver, BC! It opened me to a new culinary world, with often an Asian touch to it. 2020 also marked the long-awaited arrival of our sweet baby Lucie into our life! Lucie is now eating like us, with a healthy balanced and mostly plant-based diet, with sometimes a few adjustments when necessary (check my baby-friendly recipes).

Did you know…

  • I have had a sourdough for over 4 years. It’s a discard from a 30+ year old sourdough I received from American friends. And yes, it is still alive!
  • My favorite dessert is French rice pudding. There is barely a week that goes by without me having any.
  • I spent all my childhood in a rural area in France, in a farm, and my parents are indeed farmers.
  • When adding all my bike rides in Chicago altogether, I rode the equivalent of 3 times the distance between Chicago and Vancouver!
  • I’m not strictly vegetarian, but I do eat mostly plant-based.
  • My favorite recipes from the blog include the French Chocolate Cake, the Comforting Cauliflower Lentil Curry, the Lemon Butter Pasta with Burrata Cheese, the Quick Pear and Chocolate Crumble, the Levain Bakery Cookies Chocolate Chip Cookies and the Vegan Pad Thai.
  • I speak 3 languages fluently: French (my mother tongue), English, and Swedish.
  • My favorite vacation consists of a simple retreat in a cabin with the bare minimum equipment.
  • I had to go through the long and emotionally demanding process of an IVF in order to have our sweet baby Lucie (read my fertility journey).
  • In my adulthood I lived in Paris (France), Brussels (Belgium), Stockholm (Sweden), Chicago (US), and I now live in Vancouver BC (Canada).
  • There is rarely a day in my life I do not eat chocolate. My favorite is a 70% cocoa dark chocolate.
  • Also, did I tell you I LOVE food and always have tons of new recipe ideas in mind?
