Let’s make chocolate chip cookie mix in a jar today! This fun, entertaining and beautiful food DIY project makes an unexpensive and thoughtful gift for your family or friends. I’ve always been into homemade gifts (homemade chocolate granola, madeleines, crackers, you name it) and I never miss an occasion to prepare them. Whether it’s for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mother’s Day or any other occasion, it is sure to make the recipient happy.
This cookie mix makes no exception – I mean, it’s cookies, right? Add all the dry ingredients in layers to the jar, apply the free printable for recipe instructions and let the recipient add the wet ingredients. This no chill cookie recipe comes together with absolutely no effort and yields the most delicious soft and chewy chocolate chip cookies. Now let me guide you through the steps to help you prepare your own cookie mix!
Before you get started
This is not your usual recipe, as it requires a little of investment in terms of equipment. No worries though, the equipment is 1/ very unexpensive, 2/ reusable for the recipient, making a great eco-friendly packaging.
Here’s what you need:
- A 32-ounce Mason Jar (940 ml)
- Cotton balls. You will use them to fill up the jar up to the top, filling out the space between the ingredients and the lid. This way, all layers will stay in place.
- Paper to print out the stickers. Regular paper will do (see below for instructions).
- Other accessories. You can add a lovely ribbon around the jar, and add a personalized tag with the recipient’s name and greeting words (Merry Christmas, Homemade with Love, etc.).
Ingredients for this chocolate chip cookie mix
Listed below are the dry ingredients you need to build the mix. Keep in mind that the recipient will have to add the wet ones (egg, butter, vanilla extract) before baking the cookies. Hence, the importance of the printable applied on the jar!
- All-purpose flour
- Baking soda
- A pinch of salt
- Cinnamon (optional)
- Old-fashioned rolled oats
- Light brown sugar, packed
- Granulated or caster sugar
- Chocolate chips*
* I use regular size semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe. But you could replace them with dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, dried cranberries, nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts) or even do a mix half and half (half white chocolate chip and half dried cranberries), this recipe is very easy to customize according the flavors you like. Be creative and have fun, always!
How to prepare your cookie mix
Now that you have everything ready for the recipe, let’s get this fun food DIY project started! You’ll see, it is ridiculously easy to prepare. All you need to do is pouring all the dry ingredients in successive layers in a jar:
- Start with pouring the flour mixture (flour combined with baking soda, salt, and cinnamon) at the bottom of the jar.
- Then, add successively layers of oats, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and chocolate chips.
Don’t forget to add the cotton balls up to the top of the jar to make sure layers stay in place. Then, put the lid on, add a lovely ribbon, the label with the baking instructions, and it’s ready!
Tips to get beautiful layers. You could use a spoon to layer, but if you want to have extra neat layers, I recommend adding the ingredients through a funnel or alternatively a piping bag. This method also prevents ingredients (in particular the flour mix) to splash out on the sides of the jar.
How long can you store your cookie mix in your pantry? As long as all of the ingredients are fresh, you can store your chocolate chip cookie mix in a cool, dry, and dark place for up to 6 months. If you are to use nuts in your cookie mix however, don’t store it longer than 3 months. Also, make sure that your baking soda isn’t going to expire anytime soon!
Download your free printable
Make sure you add the recipe instructions. To say it simply, the jars would make no sense to the gift recipient without instructions for baking the cookies. You could simply write the instructions by hand, or just use the free printable I created for you here.
Download the image above or print the PDF.
All you need to do is to download the free printable, print, and place on the jar with a double stick tape (you can also try the Milk Method – yes milk can be used as a bonding agent or glue).
Now bake the cookies!
To the dry ingredients of the cookie mix, the recipient of the jar will need to add a few ingredients to bake a fresh batch of cookies:
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
How to? Heat the oven at 350°F (180°C). Mix together all the wet ingredients (egg, softened butter and vanilla) in a bowl and add them to the dry ones. Stir well until combined, then scoop out cookie balls using an ice cream scoop. Place onto a baking sheet and bake for 8 minutes. Note that this recipe does NOT require to chill the cookie dough, so you can literally have your cookies ready within minutes!
NB: This cookie mix yields about 18-20 cookies.

Looks delicious, hoping to use these as xmas gifts. I’m a little hesitant to use cotton wool balls – don’t want to get fluff in the mix. Do you think a 750ml jar would be closer to fitting the ingredients in tightly? Thank you
Delphine Fortin
Hi! Yes, a 750 ml jar would work!
Alisha
I was gifted a jar of these cookies, once I had made then I spent my days searching for the recipe because they were just so good!!! So glad I found it, can’t wait to try again.
Delphine Fortin
So happy you found them too 🙂 Thanks, Alisha!

We’ve made this over and over this Christmas and gifted so many as well as swapping out chocolate chips for raisins and added extra spice!
I’ve never made it stretch to 18-20 cookies?!?
With 2inch balls we’ve maybe had 15, but now it’s an updates quantities we are getting about 12…!
Delphine Fortin
Hi! I’m so happy that you gifted so many of them for Christmas!! The number of cookies can vary greatly depending on how big we shape the balls. I baked the cookies over a month ago and obtained 18 cookies again, but I can’t blame you if you prefer yours a little bit larger 🙂 The most important is the taste, always, but thanks for pointing this out, this may be very useful for other readers too. Happy New Year!

Hello, I just made this cookie recipe to try out before I make the jars for Christmas presents.
The dough came out too dry so I added an egg. They came out cakey. What should I add instead?
The flavor was delicious.
Delphine Fortin
Hello! Sorry to hear your cookies came out dry. Luckily it was just the trial version, and there are ways to avoid it. First of all, you do not need to add an egg to a recipe: by following the exact recipe proportions you should be able to get some deliciously soft and chewy cookies. The secret resides in monitoring the baking time properly. And because every oven is different, the result may differ from one to another. So try to stay close to the oven and after 5 minutes baking, check out how the cookies look. You’re looking for set edges but a still under-baked center. When your cookies are at this stage, remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet while they finish baking on the still hot baking sheet, even outside from the oven. This way, you will get some perfectly soft cookies and absolutely delicious. I hope this helps. Happy holidays to you! Del
Aparna
Hi Delphine,
I’m thinking of using your idea as a mother’s day gift
May I please ask how many cookies will your recipe make?
Thanks for sharing your beautiful idea
Aparna
Delphine Fortin
Hi Aparna! So sorry for my late feedback, I guess Mother’s Day is already behind you now. I hope you had the chance to make the recipe anyway, and when it comes to the numbers of cookies the recipe yields for, it all depends on how big you want to make them, but roughly a dozen of cookies 🙂 Del
Laila
Tried something like this the first time a few issues I came across
1, the jar is not filled all the way up . I used the measurements as instructed .
2, my layers got all mixed up.
Delphine Fortin
So sorry to hear that, Laila. What I usually do is that I fill it up with cotton balls if the jar is too big. This way you are sure that the jar is filled up to the top and they won’t be any mixed up layers. Hope this helps. Del
Kinga
I’ve had same problem – my layers were fine as i was very careful to keep the jar vertical but it was only 3/4 full and didn’t looks as nice. Cookies vere delicious though 🙂
Justie
Can these last a year?
Delphine Fortin
Hi Justie! It depends on the ingredients you use, especially the chocolate chips – make sure the expiration date is long enough. I hope this helps!
Nanou
Merci pour cette idée !!!
Je viens de suivre la recette au gramme près, et le pot n’est rempli qu’aux 3/4.
Es-tu sûre qu’il fallait un bocal d’1L ?
Jane Phillips
The brown sugar went hard, how to stop that!
Delphine Fortin
Hi Jane. Easy: when you (or your guest who received it as a gift) want to use the cookie mix, place a little piece of white bread in the jar the night before, leave it overnight, and the following day your sugar is soft again. Don’t forget to remove the piece of bread before you use the cookie mix 🙂
anna
can i skeep oats and put something else?
Delphine Fortin
Hi Anna! Yes you could. Replace with all-purpose flour if you wish, but make sure the ratio is correct (FYI, 120g all-purpose flour = 90g oats). I let you do the math 😉
Sarah
Del
