I have been making this peanut butter shake on repeat for the last decade, at least! Honestly, there is barely a week that goes without me making another one. It’s by far my very favorite smoothie in the entire world, perfectly healthy and super decadent at the same time. The best of both worlds!
This 3-ingredient smoothie is also the easiest you can make. Ready in no time, it features some creamy peanut butter, bananas (ideally frozen), and milk of choice. I also love to mix in some oats for time to time to make it extra filling with an additional boost of fiber.
Why you’ll LOVE this smoothie
- Only 3 ingredients
- Thick and super creamy
- Healthy and nutritious
- Tastes like dessert
A 3-ingredient peanut butter banana smoothie
- Bananas. Use them ripe and ideally frozen for a perfectly creamy texture. Keep in mind: the riper the bananas, the sweeter the smoothie.
- Peanut butter. Creamy natural and unsweetened peanut butter is best for this recipe.
- Milk of choice. Dairy or non-dairy milk work equally well in this smoothie. I like it best with regular milk, oat milk and almond milk.
How to make peanut butter banana smoothie
Be ready because it doesn’t get easier than that. Place all the ingredients together in your blender and blend on high until smooth and creamy.
Keep in mind that this recipe is very forgiving and you can’t really go wrong by adjusting the ingredient quantities. Depending on the size of your bananas, you can add more milk to thin, more banana (or some oats!) for thickness, or more peanut butter for richness.
Tips for a super creamy smoothie
The secret to get the creamiest and thick peanut butter banana smoothie is to use frozen bananas rather than fresh ones. You can also adjust the quantity of milk (the less, the creamiest), add a few spoonfuls of Greek yogurt, or some oats.
Another trick: prepare your smoothie 1 hour in advance (no need to use frozen bananas) and chill in the refrigerator. Your smoothie will become creamy once chilled. Give it a good stir before serving, and enjoy!
How to freeze bananas for this recipe?
To freeze bananas for smoothies, it’s important to choose overripe bananas (the banana peels usually appear partially spotted brown). This ensures your bananas are very sweet.
Peel the ripened bananas, and break them in half or chop into pieces. Place the banana chunks in a large ziploc bag, and freeze until ready to use. This step can be made weeks and months before making this peanut butter banana smoothie.
What if I don’t have frozen bananas? Don’t worry, your peanut butter banana smoothie will still taste delicious using fresh ripened bananas (I do it all the time). Frozen bananas make it extra creamy, but you can also achieve this texture by mixing some oats to your smoothie.
Is this smoothie healthy?
This extra delicious peanut butter shake packs in a punch. Healthy and nutritious, it is prepared with natural ingredients only, contains no added sugar, and is a great source of protein, fiber, potassium, and calcium.
Easy ingredient swaps and add-ons
- Use your preferred milk. I tried this smoothie with regular milk, almond milk, cashew milk and oat milk. All of them work great!
- Swap the nut butter. Of course it will not taste like peanut butter anymore! But if you’re looking for a few variations, you can use cashew butter or almond butter.
- Add oats. I often add ¼ cup (25g) to ⅓ cup (30g) oats to my peanut butter banana smoothie. It makes it more filling, fiber-rich, and creamier than the regular version. Just perfect for breakfast when you need energy for the day ahead of you!
- Add some cinnamon. I love adding a pinch of cinnamon to my peanut butter banana smoothie!
- Sweeten your smoothie if needed. If using fresh bananas that are not very ripe yet, you can sweeten your smoothie with one Tablespoon of your favorite natural sweetener (maple syrup, honey, agave syrup, fresh pitted dates).
- Add unsweetened cocoa powder. I love to add 1 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder to this smoothie. Regular cocoa powder would work too, but your smoothie won’t taste as much chocolaty and will be less interesting nutrition-wise.
A few nutritional boosters
If you’re willing to make your smoothie extra nutritious, you can spike it with a superfood of your choice:
- Flaxseed meal. Use one Tablespoon of flaxseed for a boost of fiber and minerals. Flaxseed is also great for nursing mamas, as it can help increase milk supply.
- Hemp seeds. Add some hemp seeds into your smoothie for a boost of healthy fats, omegas and minerals.
- Chia seeds. One Tablespoon of chia seeds will add an extra boost of protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and various micronutrients to your smoothie.

Merci

Ravie que ca te plaise autant qu’à moi! 😀
