It might sound counterintuitive, but for some reason green peas and mint always make the most delicious flavor combination. The refreshing mint balances the sweetness brought by the green peas in a very subtle way.
This mint pea dip was directly inspired from my Spring Pea Salad with Goat Cheese recipe, but this time I made a simple dip out of it, using ricotta cheese instead of goat cheese. It makes a delicious appetizer to any summer party or gathering with friends, but is also delicious as a spread on sandwiches. A great way to sneak in more veggies into your diet.

The recipe ingredients
The mint pea ricotta dip consists of 3 main ingredients, combined together with a perfect and subtle seasoning to bring up all the flavors with the right amount of sweet, salty and sharpness. Here’s what you need to make this mint pea dip:
- Green peas. You can use them fresh if in season, or frozen, but do not use canned peas that do not work well for this recipe. Whether fresh or frozen, you will need to blanch them for about 5 minutes before using in the recipe. Do not cook them longer or they may loose their bright green hue.
- Ricotta cheese. Use plain, whole-milk ricotta cheese for best results. The recipe also works well with plain cream cheese or fresh goat cheese for a little variant to the original version.
- Fresh mint. This is an essential ingredient to this dip recipe, do not skip it! You can however create a different version of this dip with fresh basil if desired.
- Other important seasonings: Extra-virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice, garlic, salt and pepper.
How to serve this mint pea dip?
Like for every dip, this mint pea dip is perfect served with any kind of crackers, pita bread, sourdough bread or raw veggies. Here are a few ideas for you to serve this dip:
- Multiseed crackers
- No-knead bread (white bread, whole wheat bread or multiseed bread)
- Homemade pita chips
- Raw veggies of choice: cucumber, carrots and celery sticks, radishes, etc.
- Topped with black/white sesame seeds and/or toasted pine nuts
Recipe variations
Best is of course to follow the recipe to a T, but if you’re feeling adventurous and love experimenting in the kitchen, I’ve got your back too! You can for instance replace the ricotta cheese with the super trendy cottage cheese (it goes viral on TikTok lately), or with fresh goat cheese for an additional salty touch. I also love the recipe with edamame instead of green peas, or with a mix of green peas and edamame. When it comes to the choice of herbs, there is no harm in replacing the fresh mint with fresh basil or even fresh cilantro for a slightly different version. I also love mixing these herbs together. Lastly, you can pimp up this dip with a hint of chili peppers for a little kick.

Ingredients
- 2 cups (300g) green peas, fresh or frozen
- 1 cup (250g) ricotta cheese
- 2 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 handful fresh meant leaves
- 3 Tablespoons olive oil
- ½ lemon, juice
- Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
- Serving options: toasted pine nuts, sesame seeds, raw veggies, crackers, etc.
Instructions
- Place a large saucepan of water to a boil. Add the fresh or frozen green peas, and cook for 5 minutes from when it starts boiling again. Drain them and plunge them into a large bowl of water with ice cubes to stop the cooking (it will keep them green), then drain them.
- Add green peas, ricotta cheese, garlic and mint leaves to a food processor. Mix until smooth and creamy. Slowly pour the olive oil and lemon juice, and mix again. Season with salt and pepper, taste, and adjust seasoning as needed.
- Serve cold, with toasted pine nuts, crackers and/or raw vegetables of choice (cucumber, celery and carrot sticks, radish slices, etc.).
Notes
Note: The seasoning is very important for a perfect dip, so make sure you taste and adjust as needed.
