These no-bake lactation bites have been a life-saver snack during my postpartum journey (together with these lactation cookies) and they still are to this day. In the early days after birth, I didn’t have time to eat breakfast until late in the morning, and these bites always came handy (and delicious!). I could grab a couple of them to start off the day after a very short night of sleep and just before starting another breastfeeding session. I’m now 4 months postpartum and there is rarely a week I don’t make these energy bites.

They’re called lactation bites because they’re prepared with ingredients that are supposed to induce, boost, and maintain milk supply. Ready within minutes, they’re the perfect nutritious snack to boost your energy levels whether you’re a nursing mom OR a non-nursing mom. They’re super healthy and I actually adopted them for life!

Why you’ll love these lactation bites

  • Perfect energy boost for nursing moms (and non-nursing moms too!)
  • Prepared with milk-boosting ingredients
  • Healthy and nutrient-dense
  • Tastes like dessert, but healthier
  • My favorite part: everyone can eat them (you don’t have to be a mom or a nursing mom!)

What are lactation bites?

Lactation bites are prepared with ingredients that are known as galactagogues. These ingredients are believed to be helpful in increasing milk supply by boosting prolactin, the hormone responsible for breast milk production.

Beyond the supposed milk-boosting action, lactation bites are delicious, nutrient-rich snacks. This makes them a perfect boost of energy for new moms.

Key ingredients in these lactation bites

These lactation bites feature some milk-boosting ingredients, such as:

  • Brewer’s yeast. This nutritional supplement is a nutrient-rich food, that may enhance energy levels and strengthen the immune system. It is a great source of B-vitamins, essential minerals, and it also contains phytoestrogens, which may help with breast tissue health and lactation.
  • Flaxseed meal. This great source of fiber and omega-3 acids also contains phytoestrogens, that can influence breast milk production.
  • Rolled oats. They are fiber-rich, loaded with antioxidants, and contain saponins and iron, which may help increase and maintain milk secretion.
  • Almonds. They are often used as lactogenic food and are rich in calcium, magnesium, vitamin E, dietary fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, providing great nutrition to nursing (and non-nursing) moms.

Good to know! Keep in mind however that there is no solid scientific evidence that these ingredients will increase your milk supply. When in doubt, always check with a lactation consultant.

Do you need to breastfeed to eat these bites?

The answer is no. I make them for myself to provide me with energy during my breastfeeding journey, but I also share them with my husband and my 3-year old when in need for a snack. Everyone love them, and they’re way better than a store-bought snack, in so many ways. And be reassured, you won’t produce milk by eating them if you’re not a nursing mom!

Lactation bites variations

The recipe offers a great panel of ingredients, but you don’t have to have them all to make these lactation bites. Here are a few possible variations:

  • Replace brewer’s yeast with nutritional yeast. While brewer’s yeast is the only one officially recognized for its lactogenic properties, nutritional yeast is also a great nutritional powerhouse for lactating people.
  • Play with the superfoods. Chia seeds and hemp seeds are optional in the recipe. You can use other seeds of choice.
  • Use another nut butter (peanut butter and cashew butter are great options too).
  • Replace honey with a handful of dates (mixed in a food processor).
  • Skip the mini chocolate chips, or use less of them, or replace with cranberries.
